Growing Microgreens

We get it! It’s not spring yet, but you really want to start growing something green. We have your solution…..microgreens! They can be grown on your kitchen countertop or windowsill in just a few weeks. And, you really don’t need a lot of supplies or equipment. If you’ve never grown anything before, give microgreens a try. You’ll feel like a gardening pro and have some super-healthy greens to add to your favourite recipes. Just follow these 5 easy steps to grow your own microgreens.

  1. Choose your favourite greens. There are so many options! Kale, sunflower, amaranth, beets, pac choi, arugula, chard. Each variety has it’s own unique flavor and nutritional benefit, so pick whichever you like.

  2. Choose your container and soil. Think shallow. These microgreens also have microroots! They don’t need a lot of soil. Make sure your container has holes on the bottom so water can drain out. Fill the container with 5 cm (2”) of seedling soil. We recommend the ProMix Premium Organic Seed Starting Mix, but any sterilized soil will do the job.

  3. Sow your seeds. Sprinkle the seeds evenly across the surface. Refer to the back of your seed packet for any special instructions. Place the tray in a warm sunny spot where your microgreens will get about 5-6 hours of sunlight each day. In the winter, you can use a grow light to ensure your plants are getting enough light.

  4. Water. Use a mister and spray lightly, or water from below using a tray of water. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Be sure not to leave your container sitting in water. It’s very important that the soil drains freely.

  5. Harvest and enjoy! When your microgreens are about 2” high, and the first pair of leaves have opened, they’re ready! You can gently pull up the whole plant or use a scissor and cut just at the base of the plant.
