Start your pepper seeds now.

Hot pepper plants are always popular at Spruce It Up! “The hotter the better” is a phrase we hear often from shoppers in the greenhouse. You could definitely wait until our starter pepper plants come in this Spring, but why not grow your own peppers from seed? February is the time to plant your pepper seeds.

So many peppers!

If you like it hot, there are a lot of peppers to choose from! The Scoville Scale measures the heat or piquancy of chili peppers. The scale ranges from 0 for a bell pepper all the way to 350,000 for some extremely hot varieties!

Ghost Chili Pepper

This is one of the world’s hottest peppers, and you can grow it in your own home! How cool is that? We recommend handling the seeds and fruit with extreme caution. Here in Calgary, AB these seeds can be started in February. Pinch back growing tips to encourage leaf production,

Spicy Slice Peppers

These are a variety of jalapeno. If you choose the Spicy Slice, your plant will be laden with perfect green pods, about 10 cm in length. It has a profound flavor as well as that unique, jalapeno spice. Remember, peppers will tolerate dry soil but only make good growth if the soil is kept evenly moist.

Witch Stick Peppers

These are an extra long pepper that start green and then mature to a deep red. They have a corkscrew-shaped pod that grow to about 20 cm long. Not quite as hot, they have a more sweet and distinctive flavor. Germination may take 8-18 days depending on how warm the soil is.
