What’s so Great About Worm Castings?

Worm castings are simply earthworm poop! It’s 100% organic and loaded with beneficial bacteria, trace minerals, and plant nutrition that will help your plant thrive. Just in case you’re wondering, it doesn’t smell bad. In fact it doesn’t have much of a smell at all. The term for using worm castings as fertilizer is called ‘Vermicomposting’.

When plants grow in their natural environment outside they have the benefit of insects, live microbes, and other tiny creatures that convert soil minerals into plant food. But when you’re growing a plant indoors inside a container, it doesn’t take long before those vital nutrients are depleted. When you apply worm castings, all those incredible nutrients are absorbed into the potting soil quickly, making it available to the roots right away. It won’t take long before your plant begins to thrive.

Another great thing about worm castings is that your plant will be less susceptible to pests and diseases like root rot, spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. The worm castings help ensure that the plant grows to be healthy and strong.

There are a few ways to apply worm castings to your soil. If you’re transplanting a new houseplant, you can create a potting mix of about 20-50% worm castings and the rest potting soil. Then add perlite, vermiculite, or whatever else you like to use. If you want to apply worm castings to your already potted up plants, just use it as a top dressing. Sprinkle the worm castings around the base of your plant and water it in well.
