Growing Tropical Houseplants in Calgary

Calgary’s cold winters and dry air may seem challenging, but with the right care, you can grow lush greenery indoors all year.

Choosing the Right Tropical Plants

Some tropicals adapt better to Calgary’s indoor conditions. Great options include:

  • Snake Plant (Sansevieria): Hardy, tolerates low light and minimal watering.

  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): Low-maintenance, trailing, grows in many light conditions.

  • Monstera (Monstera deliciosa): Iconic foliage, thrives in bright, indirect light.

  • Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): Gorgeous white blooms, tolerates moderate to low light.

  • ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): Drought-tolerant and nearly indestructible.

  • Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata): Stunning leaves, needs bright light and consistent care.

Creating the Right Environment

  • Light: Most tropicals need bright, indirect sunlight. Use grow lights during Calgary’s darker months.

  • Temperature & Humidity:

    • Maintain 50–60% humidity with a humidifier or pebble tray.

    • Group plants together to create a humid microclimate.

    • Mist plants regularly (except for rot-prone types).

  • Watering & Soil:

    • Water only when the top 1–2" of soil is dry.

    • Use well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes.

  • Fertilization:

    • Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month in spring and summer.

    • Reduce feeding during winter dormancy.

Succulents & Cacti - Low Maintenance Choice

Looking for something simple? Succulents and cacti are perfect for busy lifestyles.

  • Thrive in bright, indirect light.

  • Require sandy or cactus-specific potting mix with excellent drainage.

  • Store water in their stems and leaves—water only every 2 weeks or when the soil is completely dry.

  • Overwatering is the #1 mistake—when in doubt, skip watering!

  • Occasional fertilization in spring/summer keeps them looking their best.
