If you're looking to beautify your yard, Spruce It Up Garden Centre is one place in Calgary that has everything you need. Décor? Yep. Lawn furniture? We’ve got that too. And of course, plants, trees and everything to do with landscaping is available as well. “My goal in building Spruce It Up was to have a full-service garden centre where the client really has that one-stop shop,” says owner Meryl Coombs, who started the business in 2006.
Spruce It Up Garden Centre covers a 20-acre site, featuring 15,000 square feet of greenhouse and a 4,000 square foot retail showroom filled with all sorts of exterior décor. “It just goes hand and hand with the garden," says Meryl. "People always want to spruce up their backyard and add a bit of colour; add some new décor. It finishes off their landscape and we help them to accomplish that.”
The Centre is the true definition of full service. If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, Spruce It Up has designers and landscapers to deliver and install whatever you need. “For us to service everybody like that is a bit of a challenge,” says Meryl. “But it also keeps us in tune with what Calgary’s looking for in the landscaping industry."
Educating Calgary's Gardeners and Landscapers
Being at the foot of the Rocky Mountains means Calgary has a very different climate and its own set of growing issues, such as a 20-degree change in temperature that occurs in the span of only a few hours when a chinook blows in. “We have to set ourselves apart by educating our clients so they can make the right choices,” says Meryl. “Fall preparation for our plant materials is very important, for instance. So educating a customer on what to do with their plants in the fall is very important to us."
The staff at Spruce It Up knows their stuff when it comes to gardening and they're ready and willing to share that knowledge with their clients. “One of the things we’re finding in being a part of the community and getting to know our clients is they all really want to learn. It’s just amazing,” says Meryl. “They’re making an investment in their yard and they want to learn to do it right.”
